Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) - Movie Review

Continued from the previous Resident Evil movies - Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Apocalypse, the third and final installment of the series, Resident Evil: Extinction does better than its predecessors in many aspects.

SPOILER WARNING: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The movie starts off with the same scene from Resident Evil: Apocalypse where Alice (Milla Jovovich) walks out from shower, naked. She then puts on her red dress and walks into a familiar hall. She stops and get distracted by a picture of her husband and her together. Then, she finds her exit and ends up in an aisle with the door behind her closed. Laser beams move in parallel towards Alice but she has managed to avoid them but making a huge jump. Then, the second batch of laser beams come along. This time, they come in diagonal shapes, the Alice has jumped into the air-conditioning passage as it is the only way to avoid getting sliced. Later, Alice was somewhat shot dead by two men fully dressed in white anti-radiation suit. It turns out that, it is one of Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) many simulations. Dr. Isaacs has reproduced hundred of Alice clones using her sample of her blood.

Meanwhile, the entire world has turned into a desert, with the deadly virus infecting most of the world’s population, turning almost everyone into the walking undead or zombies. Alice has been forced to roam the Earth alone attempting to stay off Umbrella’s radar. At one point, she has received a call for help only to be the victim of some rascals, whose in turn plans to torture her. In her attempt to escape, Alice kills one of them with a kick and is thrown down to a lower ground with her hands cuffed. The rascals, whom themselves look like mutants, decide to release the mutated hounds. Then, the action starts with Alice killing the hounds one by one using her guns and knifes and superb unarmed combat. In the end, the place where the rascals are standing collapsed to the ground and the mutated dogs go on feeding frenzy!

At the same time, a convoy led by Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) and former U.B.C.S. agent Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) along with L.J. (Mike Epps) and other survivors who have not been infected, travel from small town to small town in search of other survivors and supplies. Their goal is to find a place that has not been infected by the virus. Alice somewhat does not respond to their calling as she knows she has become a liability and could endanger those around her.

Alas, Alice joins the others in the hunt after saving the convoy from a swarm of ravenous birds. The entire convoy decides to go to Las Vegas as the only resort to replace their depleted gas.

Dr. Isaacs has been conducting research at Umbrella. This time, though, instead of developing a new viral creature, he is searching for a cure; a new serum that, in previous experiments, produce a subdued creature, one that has reasoning skills and vague memories, but if angered, will fly into a blind rage and devour any human unlucky enough to be in close proximity.

Unfortunately for the convoy, Dr. Isaacs manages to find Alice and tries to capture her in Las Vegas by setting up a trap. Alice and the others, not knowing Dr. Isaacs was tracking her down, this time face not normal zombies, but the new enraged zombies - much stronger than the normal zombies. Dr. Isaacs goes with the strike team during the operation and is hiding on the rooftop of a nearby building. He manages to shut down Alice, but no for long. Alice manages to fight back and even the microchip inside her (that is used to control her) is burnt and she goes on the kill every member of the Umbrella on the rooftop except Dr. Isaac, who manages to escape in a helicopter despite being bitten by his new creation. When Claire questioned Alice on why didn’t she shoot down the chopper, Alice tells her that the chopper is the only transport that they can make use of.

As Oded has been bitten, he makes a huge sacrifice by crashing his truck onto the tonnes of zombies surrounding the entrance of The Umbrella Corporation while Alice drives the others into the compound area of The Umbrella. Claire guides the other to escape into the helicopter as Alice has some business to take care.

Upon returning to his underground lab, Dr. Isaacs injects himself several times with the anti-virus hoping it would cure him, only to find the serum turning him self into a new creature, a self-regenerating mutant with tentacles that can extend out an infinite length. Alice goes into the lab only to find the entire place destroyed. A projected image of a girl appears and startles Alice but she guides Alice into the location of Dr. Isaacs, even though the girl was the one who helps Dr. Isaacs to locate Alice in the first place. Ironic?

The fight between Alice and Dr. Isaacs is enthralling with Dr. Isaacs manages to regenerate himself from the slashes of Alice’s blades and Alice, barely wounded. In the process, one of Alice’s clones is awaken but mysteriously dies. In the end, both Alice and Dr. Isaacs end up in a familiar aisle. Without notice, laser beams move directly towards Dr. Isaacs and Alice and the beams has Dr. Isaacs sliced into chunks of meats while it stops just before it hits Alice. Alice’s clone is the one who is controlling the beams as she was awakened by Alice’s power surge.

The movie ends with Alice warning the Umbrella corporation leader in Tokyo and showing a screen of hundreds, maybe thousands of her clones in bubble-shape glasses.

Now, this is what I call ‘cool’. On September 22, 2007, these people were trying to break the record of world’s largest zombie lurch of 894 zombies but failed. Whatever it is, it seems quite fun!
