Mike Myers and Jessica Alba in "The Love Guru"
Guru Maurice Pitka (played by Mike Myers) is a self-help life coach and is the second most popular guru, behind Deepak Chopra. His ultimate goal is to take over from Deepak Chopra as the number one guru. An opportunity arises when Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) enlists the help of Pitka to help Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), the star player of the ice hockey team, Toronto Maple Leafs has a problem which affects his hockey performance. This problem is caused by the fact that his wife, Prudence (Meagan Good) has left him for L.A. Kings goalkeeper, Jacques “Le Coq” Grandé (Justin Timberlake). Since Bullard offers a generous amount of payment plus an opportunity to be invited to Oprah Winfrey’s show, Pitka accepts the opportunity as he knows it would help him becoming the number one guru.
Though the movie is partially funny, most of the jokes are satirical — the movie relies mostly on mindless crotch humor and midget jokes. Verne Troyer (who played Mini-Me in Austin Powers movies) plays Punch Cherkov, the coach of Toronto Maple Leafs. When you put the entire movie casts together, you get a movie that’s full of crap. But, at least, it is still better than Disaster Movie, which has like 0% rating at Rotten Tomatoes.
Overall, Mike Myers is still a great comedian, he just needs a better script. A spiritual, self-help guru is like a character totally opposite him. The Love Guru is still watchable if you have nothing better to do.
