Sucker Punch (2011) – Movie Review

Sucker Punch is an action fantasy film directed by Zack Snyder who has had success with the film “300″ and “Watchmen”.

SPOILER WARNING: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Scott Glenn, Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Vanessa Hudgens in "Sucker Punch"
Scott Glenn, Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone and Vanessa Hudgens in "Sucker Punch"

With an ensemble female cast of Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung, Sucker Punch is like a cross between DOA: Dead or Alive with additional touch of fantasy of Alice in Wonderland. The story begins with a silent film style story-telling of Baby Doll (Emily Browning) before she was sent to a mental institution by her step-father.

Despite being held in capture, Baby Doll has a vast and vivid imagination and often dream of escaping. She urges the other girls — Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) to join her in a plan to escape.

Although the film is not as violent (blood didn’t spill like ketchup) as Snyder’s other films such as “300″ and “Watchmen”, it is delusional and not morally alright.

Overall, Sucker Punch has poor story-telling and after watching the film, you won’t feel like you have been slapped, but you will feel like you get punched, literally. Perhaps, Snyder was in a delusion when he wrote and directed the film.

My ratings: 6 out of 10.
