In late 12th century England, Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) and three other common soldiers attempt to return to their homeland, having spent a decade fighting abroad. Along the way they encounter an ambush of King’s guard by Sir Godfrey (Mark Strong); an English Knight with French blood. The King of France had earlier ordered Sir Godfrey to assassinate Richard.

When Sir Godfrey discovers that the King is slain in a war, Robin and his fellow soldiers chase after Godfrey. Robin even takes an aim at Godfrey from long distance but his arrow only pierces through Godfrey’s face leaving him scarred for life. Robin promises a dying Knight, Sir Robert Loxley, to return a sword to Loxley’s father in Nottingham. Robin and his men steal the armor of the slain Knights and head for the English ships under the guise of noblemen.

Back in England, Robin (guised as Loxley) informs the Royal family of the King’s death and witnesses the crowning of King John (Oscar Isaac). King John sends Sir Godfrey with the task of collecting taxes from his poor Kingdom. Little did he know that Sir Godfrey is working for the French King and uses this Royal Decree to stir up Civil War in England in order to prepare for the French invasion.

Robin and his men head to Nottingham to return the sword to the rightful owner but Sir Walter Loxley (Max von Sydow) asks him to impersonate his son in order to prevent the family lands being taken away by the Royalty. Initially, Loxley’s widow, Lady Marian (Cate Blanchett) is dubious of Robin, but slowly begin to accept him when he manages to acquire back the grain for planting.

The northern Barons are furious over Godfrey’s actions for a civil war against King John. When King John is informed by William Marshal (William Hurt) that Godfrey’s plan to stir up a civil war to prepare for the French invasion, the King meets the Barons and agrees on signing of a charter of rights. A battle pursues when Godfrey’s men are chased off by Robin and the northern Barons from Nottingham.

In the finale, the invasion of the French on England’s south coast are met by the English soldiers with the English ends up as victor, during which Robin finishes Godfrey with a perfectly executed shot from a long distance. King John refuses to sign the Magna Carta, and instead he declares Robin (revealed not to be Sir Loxley) to be an outlaw to be killed on sight. As a result, Robin and his men move to Sherwood Forest and become Robin of the Hood (Robin Hood), the legendary figure in English folklore.

Overall, Robin Hood is an eye-opener and tells a tale of Robin Hood before he becomes the legend. However, in the film, Robin Hood is depicted as a commoner rather than an aristocrat. Russell Crowe does exceptionally well in his portrayal as the legend but lacks the English accent while Cate Blanchett shows the world she’s more than a High Elf (as in The Lord of the Rings trilogy) as she plays Lady Marion elegantly. The film is solid with a well mixtures of actions, adventures and humors, the movie is entertaining indeed. However, the film may be little too long at 2 hours and 20 minutes.

My ratings: 7 out of 10.
