The world has discovered about the two immortal species of Vampires and Lycans and an all-out war to study and eradicate them has begun. Like other vampires, Selene and Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) has been resisting the humans but in the end, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) has been captured by the humans and imprisoned in a cryogenic suspension for 12 years until she is freed by another suspect named Eve (India Eisley). It is learnt that Eve is a hybrid and the daughter of Selene and Michael.

Selene then becomes acquainted with David (Theo James), a vampire when she is searching for her daughter Eve. David leads Selene and Eve into the secret hideout of the vampire coven not knowing Selene is closely tracked by Dr. Jacob Lane (Stephen Rea) and the humans who captured her. Thomas (Charles Dance), David’s dad who leads the vampire coven is strongly against fighting back against the humans as he is deceived to believe the Lycans which has retaliated against the humans have almost extinct.

When the Lycans launches an attack on the vampire coven in order to capture Eve, Selene finally learns the Lycans have been hiding and are protected by the scientists in the laboratory. In fact, Dr. Jacob and many of the laboratory staff are Lycans studying the blood of Selene, Eve and Michael as they have the unique abilities other vampires do not have.

Underworld: Awakening brings a lot of similarity towards Resident Evil film franchise when the world is closer to apocalypse. Of course, Kate Beckinsale as Selene the vampire warrioress excels in every area. Despite all the non-stop actions, the length of film is getting shorter and shorter and storytelling has become almost nothing at all.

Overall, Underworld: Awakening is no doubt full of action but with more guns and grenades rather than claws and fangs. Albeit the action-packed scenes, the film seems to be saving the storyline for a possibility of yet another sequel.

  • 6 out of 10
  • An action-packed fantasy film for the fans of vampires, werewolves and of course, Kate Beckinsale.
