John C. Reilly and Chris Massoglia in "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant"
Darren (Chris Massoglia) is a bright 16-year-old student with decent grades and a perfect family and a perfect life. Meanwhile, his best friend, Steve (Josh Hutcherson) is a totally opposite character with broken family. One day they find an invite to a freak show and decide to pay a visit. Darren has a liking for spiders while Steven loves vampires. In the show, Steve recognizes one of the performers as a vampire from his vampire books.
When the police shuts down the show, Steve goes to the vampire Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) and convinces him to turn him into a vampire. Crepsley with his fellow vampire, Gavner Purl (Willem Dafoe), rejects Steve’s wish and Steve vows to kill him. Darren overhears the conversation and steals Madam Octa, a very poisonous spider.
The next day, Darren brings Madam Octa to school but accidentally releases it and it bites Steve who goes into coma. When Darren goes to Crepsley to ask for the antidote, Crepsley agrees under the condition that Darren must become his half-vampire assistant. In order to save his best friend, Darren did not hesitate despite having to leave his family. By doing so, he unknowingly breaks a 100-year-old truce between two warring factions of peaceful vampires and a group of stereotypical bloodsucking killers called the Vampaneze.
Overall, the movie is funny, hilarious despite the fact it is a half-vampire film. Vampires in this film are friendly, decent and peaceful creatures while the other-half of them, called Vampaneze are brutal killers. John C. Reilly gives an incredible performance as a vampire while the others miserably under perform. If not for John C. Reilly, the movie would have been lacked of creativity as the rest seems to just follow the script.
