I have been using and testing Backpack for about a couple of weeks and found it both useful and not so useful. I would love to review it sooner but I was quite packed with things. Backpack is part of 37 signals but here I’m only going to review Backpack.
Backpack is good because: -
- It has many functions: -
- Organize your to-do lists, post notes, images or photos
- Keep your calendar online
- Plan a personal or business trip
- Collaborate on a new business idea
- Keep a list of gift ideas for friends
- Build a For Sale page
- Organize and plan a wedding or event
- It’s web-based, thus, you can login to your account anywhere. No software or download necessary
- You can share your Backpack page with others, privately or publicly
- You can email to-do lists, notes, files, and images to a Backpack page. You can have Backpack email you the content from a specific page too.
- The calendar and reminder feature allow you to set up email and SMS/text-message reminders that can be sent to your cell phone whenever you want
- It’s FREE! Of course, for the basic features only
Backpack is bad because: -
- You have to pay to post images. Although a web-savvy person can also add images hosted elsewhere by putting in <img src=”url”>, not many people, especially business people are that tech-savvy
- You have to upgrade to use the calendar. Although calendar might not be a very important feature, I strongly think they should include it in the free package
- You need to organize your time and have a strict discipline - no matter how good is the software, I believe a good time management skill would help, otherwise, this thing is as dysfunctional as any other bad software
Aight, I guess point 3 is not exactly bad, but you just need to put this to use to optimize it. Like they say, the best thing in life is free. So, use it!
