Rhona Mitra and Michael Sheen in "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans"

Before the start of the first Underworld movie, Lycans or werewolves were once the slaves of the aristocratic vampires dated back to the Dark Ages. A young Lycan named Lucian (Michael Sheen) is spared by Viktor (Bill Nighy), a powerful but ostentatious Vampire overlord. Viktor’s daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra) patrols every night to defend the Coven from hoards of ferocious werewolves. Enslaved by the Death Dealers (vampires), Lucian obeys every instruction that is given to him, including killing his own kind.

When Sonja disobeys her dad’s instruction by joining the others to safely escort the humans back to the vampires’ coven, Lucian senses the danger of an overwhelming numbers of werewolves and goes for her rescue by removing the chain on his neck and turns into a Lycan. His transformation and his powerful howl silences every werewolves. Despite saving Sonja, Lycan is punished by Viktor for breaking rules and thus, Lucian’s anger over the enslavement grows more.

Lucian and Sonja are secretly making out almost every night without realizing that Tannis (Steven Mackintosh) has been observing. As Lucian is planning to escape, he needs all the help he can get from Sonja. When they realize that Tannis knows about their secret relationship, Sonja gives up her seat as a council member to Tannis in exchange for secret-keeping and freedom for Lucian.

Lucian manages to release almost every slaves but not everyone manages to escape from the castle. When Viktor finds out about Lucian’s escape, he uses his daughter, Sonja as a bait to get Lucian back to the castle. Lucian foolishly ignores his men and returns to the castle only to be captured again. This time, Lucian has to witness the execution of his lover, Sonja in the dungeon as Sonja has not only broken the law by being with the filthy Lycans but she’s pregnant with a possible hybrid child. Sonja is burnt to ashes when the rooftop is uncovered with the rays of sun turning Sonja into a dark ashes. Lucian becomes furious and mad, he transforms into a werewolf and makes a bid to escape. However, the vampire warriors manage to hold him down with their powerful arrows. Despite that, Lucian manages to make a powerful howl that brings the entire forces of werewolves and the escaped Lycans back to the castle to fight for their lives. Rest assured is an exciting battle between werewolves and the vampires.

In the end, Viktor manages to escape through an underground river by feigning death after Lucian thrusts a sword through his throat. Tannis and Viktor are seen escaping in a small boat with Viktor going back into the coffin to hibernate. The ending footage (which is a scene from Underworld) shows Selene (Kate Beckinsale) disbelieving the tale of his father, Viktor, of whom was said have murdered the entire family and blamed the Lycans.

Overall, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is a prequel which heavily focused on the Lycans and werewolves. The special effect and the transformation from human form to werewolves are just breathe-taking. However, the Death Dealers or the vampires seem weak and heavily relies on armor and weapons in their battles. Still, it is a movie well worth watching.

Brendan Fraser in "Inkheart"

Mortimer “Mo” Folchart (played by Brendan Fraser) and his 12-year-old daughter, Meggie (Eliza Bennett), share a passion for books. Mo has been searching for a book called Inkheart through secondhand book shops for nearly a decade. When he finally finds the book, he accidentally brings Dustfinger (Paul Bettany) to life. When Dustfinger confronts Mo in order to tell him that Capricorn (Andy Serkis) is pursuing Mo and he is in danger, Mo completely brushes him aside. Instead, Mo chooses to visit his mother, Elinor Loredan (Helen Mirren) in Italy and brings Meggie along.

Unexpectedly, Dustfinger appears in Italy, where Mo and Meggie stay only to tell Mo that he corporates with Capricorn since it’s the only chance for him to get back into the book after Mo has repeatedly refused to do so. Capricorn’s men ransacks the house and the library in order to find the book entitled "Inkheart". They also capture Mo, Meggie and Elinor as prisoners and throw them into a dungeon together with mystical beasts in adjacent cages inside a castle. With so many things occurring, Mo finally reveals to Meggie and Elinor that he’s a Silvertongue and he has an extraordinary gift for bringing characters from books to life when he reads them aloud. But his action has also caused his wife, Resa (Sienna Guillory) who has disappeared into its the pages of Inkheart.

Mo’s plan to use the book to rescue Resa is thwarted when Capricorn throws the book into the fireplace. Mo and his family together with the aid of Dustfinger and Farid (a character from Ali Baba and the forty thieves) create a thunderstorm to divert the attention of Capricorn’s men in a bid to escape. They manage to escape and find the original author of Inkheart. Even though Mo manages to find the original manuscript in order to rescue his wife and send Capricorn and all the villains back to the book, little does he knows that Capricorn has captured his daughter whom also has the gift like his father and Capricorn’s evil plan to bring the Shadow to life.

Overall, it is a weak fantasy movie with predictable storyline. Only if the movie was shown in December 2007, as it was planned originally, it may be more interesting. Other than that, it is quite decent with Brendan Fraser playing a character with more dialogues compared to his acting in the Journey to the Center of the Earth movie.

Adam Sandler and Teresa Palmer in "Bedtime Stories"

Skeeter Bronson is only a handyman in a hotel runs by Barry despite his promise to Skeeter’s dad. Barry has a new business plan to build a huge hotel on a site currently occupied by a school. Skeeter’s hope fade away when Barry announces that Kendall (Guy Pearce) will be the General Manager of the new hotel instead of him. Also, Kendall has started a new relationship with Barry’s daughter, Violet (Teresa Palmer).

Skeeter’s sister, Wendy (Courtney Cox) loses her job as the school principal as the school has to close down. Wendy plans to go out of town for a week and asks Skeeter to take care of her kids at night while her friend, Jill (Keri Russell) will take care of them in the morning. When the bedtime stories Skeeter tells his nephew and niece become true the next day, he attempts to take advantage of it and make up outlandish tale so he can make a fortune out of it only to realize only the kids can make the story comes true.

His fortune changes when he is given a shot at running the new hotel when Barry gets him and Kendall to present him a new theme for the new hotel on his birthday party. Skeeter moves in to the hotel to fully focus on his presentation and the kids move in with him as well. Mickey (Russell Brand), Skeeter’s waiter friend also occasionally drops in.

Skeeter tells a tale of him getting a free red Ferrari (in the dream, it’s a red horse named Ferrari) and his niece adds that he will save a damsel in distress and while the damsel tries to kiss him, an angry dwarf kicks him and even before the next day, he hurriedly goes out to the Ferrari’s showroom only to get his wallet stolen. But he manages to save Violet from the paparazzi and she almost gives him a kiss except that an angry dwarf really appears and kicks him.

Skeeter wants his last bedtime story to depict him beating Kendall to the General Manager position at Barry’s birthday party and even though his wishes come true, his fears of getting killed by a big fireball had him uses the fire extinguisher on Barry’s birthday cake which gets him fired.

He loses not only his job but his trust from Jill, who is upset over the news that the hotel’s new location will be on Patrick and Bobbi’s elementary school. When the narrator tells Skeeter he still has hope, he dashes to the land office to stop Barry from demolishing the school. So happen, the person in charge in the land office is his old schoolmate and Barry’s application to build a new hotel over the school has been denied. Cleverly, Skeeter gets Barry a new location in Santa Monica’s beach, which was previously rejected. Barry and Skeeter then hug each other despite the fact that Barry’s afraid of contacting germs.

Skeeter gets to run a successful but low-rise beach hotels where Kendall and Aspen (Lucy Lawless) are the waiter and room cleaner respectively. Whereas Barry disposes his hotel line to go into health services and Mickey dates Violet and becomes the 9th richest man in the world.

Overall, Bedtime Stories is a funny family film which tells a tale that dreams do come true and even not all stories have a happy ending, sometimes, it’s up to one’s course of action. Bedtime stories, anyone?

Hellboy and members from BPRD in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army"

The movie begins with a bedtime story told by human dad when Hellboy was still a kid. The father tells a tale of the Golden Army which consists of 70 times 70 indestructible robots which equal 4,900 indestructible robots which were made by a goblin during a war between the human and the elves for King Balor (Roy Dotrice). When the Golden Army had crushed many humans to death in a battle, the king decides to part the crown which control the Golden Army to three pieces — one given to the human, the other kept by him and the last piece by his daughter, Princess Nuala (Anna Walton).

Back to the future, there is an ongoing auction in New York of antiques. One of the items is one part of the precious crown. Without wasting any time, Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) and his servant, Mr. Wink (Brian Steele) intrude the auction house and kill every human in there by letting go thousands of tooth fairies. It was known that the tooth fairies consume anything from calcium to bones, meats and of course, teeth!

When Hellboy and his aquatic friend, Abe Sapiens (Doug Jones) along with his pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) reaches the auction house, no surviving humans are left, instead the tooth fairies hide themselves before launching relentless attack at the members BPRD and manage to consume at least two men from BPRD.

Back in the fantasy world, Prince Nuada defies his father’s truce between humanity and the invisible realm by saying he wants to claim back Earth, and in order to do that he needs all the three pieces of the crown. He takes no time and slaughter his dad to gather at least two pieces of the total three. Before Prince Nuada finishes off the king, the princess has already fled the scene with the last piece of the precious crown only to be followed by Abe Sapiens into a secret building, not knowing that Mr. Wink, Prince Nuada’s faithful servant is following behind.

During a fierce battle between Hellboy and Mr. Wink, Mr. Wink ends up being dragged into a giant oven of fire when his mechanical hand is stucked as he attempts to punch Hellboy. While the next monster is a gigantic Forest Elemental which is nearly ten-story tall, it provides little resistance to Hellboy who easily kill the creature with his gun.

Even the fighting scene between the Golden Army and Hellboy is quite brief albeit entertaining, Hellboy II is more of a fantasy film rather than an action-packed movie in which the first Hellboy movie is. Perhaps, the main focus in this film is not the impressive visual effects nor the limited action scenes, but it is the development of the character Hellboy. During the fight against the elemental, Hellboy was questioned by Prince Nuada. If he kills the creature, he would be killing the last of its kind — a dilemma which only ended when Johann Krauss (John Alexander, voiced by Seth MacFarlane) notwithstandingly commands Hellboy to finish off the creature. In the last part of the movie, Liz Sherman is faced with a dilemma of whether to let Hellboy lives or let him die after the Angel of Death tells her that Hellboy would be dangerous to mankind as his mission is to destroy Earth in the near future. She embraces her dilemma too quickly and does not hesitate to choose Hellboy over Earth despite the warning.

Overall, it is a great film though it may lack many elements for the demanding audiences. Mind you though, Hellboy II is more than just a fantasy film as director, Guillermo del Toro has put in many thoughts to make the movie more real than any other comic book adapted movies.

Prince Caspian, the Pevensies and Trumpkin

Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) is wakened by his professor who explains to him that his aunt has given birth to a son. Caspian has to escape because Lord Miraz (Sergio Castellitto) has a newborn son who will be the next heir if Miraz kills Caspian. Caspian is told to head for the woods with the Telmarine soldiers follow despite the initial reluctancy. He meets the Narnian dwarves and blows the magic horn only to have Nikabrik, the black dwarf knocks him out. However, the other dwarf, Trumpkin is captured by the Telmarine soldiers.

1,300 years have passed since the Pevensies were rulers of Narnia when the four of them, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are pulled back to Narnia when Prince Caspian blows Susan’s ivory horn. They manage to save Trumpkin who is thrown by the Telmarine soldiers into the sea. Trumpkin and the Pevensies eventually find Prince Caspian.

Caspian and Peter have different ideas on attacking Miraz’s armies. Peter suggests to attack Miraz at the castle which Caspian thinks is absurd. But, they go on anyway, without Aslan. The Narnians attempt to capture Miraz at the castle at night and are doing fine until the archers are alerted. Asterius (Shane Rangi), the great minotaur sacrifices himself by keeping the gates open with his great strength but only half of the Narnians are able to escape leaving the rest brutally slaughtered when the gate goes down crushing Asterius.

Back in Narnia, Peter blames Caspian for wasting too much time trying to kill Miraz in his bedroom. Nikabrik manages to lure Caspian into a cave to meet his two friends, a hag and a wer-wolf who attempt to summon the White Witch who wants just a drop of Caspian’s blood. Fortunately, Peter, Susan and Edmund show up and Edmund shatters the ice where the witch is before she can get her wish.

As the Telmarine armies march nearer towards Narnia, Peter suggests to have a one on one dual with Miraz in order to delay the marching while Lucy rides off quietly to find Aslan. Peter manages to defeat Miraz but he lets Prince Caspian to finish Miraz off only to have Caspian lets Miraz go with the promise to give back Narnia to the Narnians.

In a dark twist, Lord Sopespian (Damián Alcázar) finishes off Miraz and blame the Narnian archers who betray them to start off a war. The Narnians try all sort of ways including destroying pillars in the underground tunnels when the Telmarine calvaries march towards them, swooping over the Telmarine soldiers using archers on Gryphons, but eventually have to retreat.

Luckily, Lucy has found Aslan who awakens the trees who have been in a deep slumber with his powerful roar. With the trees helping the Narnians, the Telmarine soldiers has to retreat back to the castle only to have Lucy standing on the opposite side of the bridge with Aslan. When Sopespian calls for the Telmarine soldiers to charge to the other side, Aslan roars to bring the River God to life who destroys the bridge and wipes out the Telmarine soldiers.

Overall, the movie is far more superior than its predecessor with better special effects, greater actings despite the darker scenes and superb cinematography. The movie is also surprisingly hilarious with adorable characters such as Reepicheep, a swashbuckling mouse and Trumpkin, the cynical red dwarf.

Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin in "Nim’s Island"

Nim Rusoe (Abigail Breslin) is an 11-year-old girl who loves to imagine based on her favorite fictional character, Alex Rover (Gerard Butler). Her father, Jack Rusoe (also played by Butler) is a popular scientist and writer live together with her daughter (and her daughter’s animal friends) in an isolated island. The secret location of the island is revealed to nobody except their provisions suppliers.

When Nim’s father goes missing on the island on his trip to find "Nim’s Protozoa", Nim becomes desperate and email Alex Rover to come save her father, didn’t realize that Alex Rover on the book, who is a brave, daring male adventurer is different from the real Alex Rover a.k.a. Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster) — a conservative woman who has never been out of apartment for months.

Guided by an imaginative character, Alex Rover, Alexandra brave herself by flying to Borneo, taking helicopter and stealing boat to reach the remote island based on the email communication they had just to save the little girl, Nim.

Meanwhile, Jack is stranded in the middle of an ocean with a sinking boat, thanks to Galileo (Nim’s friend), Jack manages to salvage his tools and fix his boat in order to return to the island. When he finally manages to return home, so happen, Alexandra is right there as though as she’s waiting for Jack Rusoe. The movie ends with the three of them together live happily ever after and U2’s Beautiful Day is played over the credits.

Overall, it is quite a decent movie with exaggeration which sometimes is too good to be true. After all, Nim’s Island is a fantasy film, so it is alright.

Alex Etel and Priyanka Xi in the movie "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep"

The movie begins with a male tourist (Nathan Christopher Haase) looking a picture of "Water Horse" in awe. When the female tourist (Megan Katherine) says it could be real, the young man argues and an old man interrupts with his own tale of the Water Horse.

Back in the 1940’s in Scotland, a young boy named Angus MacMorrow (Alex Etel) lives in a large house with his mother and sister and a maid, and later also another handyman. Angus thinks his father is still alive and waits for him. He discovers a big mysterious egg and cares for what hatches of it: a ‘water horse’ he calls Crusoe that grows so rapidly becoming the fabled Loch Ness Monster.

Young Angus keeps the creature a secret, but later he tells his sister and the male servant. Lewis Mowbray (Ben Chaplin) who works as a handyman for MacMorrow’s tells Angus that Crusoe belongs to a species which can asexually reproduce through parthenogenesis, and always die after laying an egg.

Despite without any knowledge and permission from Mrs. MacMorrow, a group of soldiers involved in the defense against possible attacking or hiding German U-boats is stationed in and near the house. The creature is sometimes attacked by the dog of the soldiers. It grows fast and is brought to the lake.

It is still friends with Angus, and lets him ride it underwater, coming to the surface from time to time for breathing. However, it suffers from shells shot into the lake for practice, and attacks the soldiers. Angus falls into the Loch and Crusoe saves him. At first it cannot leave the lake due to an anti-submarine net intended to catch possible German U-boats entering the lake, but later it succeeds. Angus finally accepts the creature’s departure, and also that his father died.

After the story was told eventually the story-teller reveals himself to be Angus MacMorrow. It then shows another boy manages to find a new egg from the shore while his mother is calling his name.

Freddie Highmore and Sarah Bolger play Jared/Simon Grace and Mallory Grace respectively in The Spiderwick Chronicles

The film starts with a man named Arthur Spiderwick (David Strathairn) who somewhat seems hasty in writing a book filled with weird stuff. It seems like something is pursuing him that makes him hurriedly seals the book to keep it safe. Then the film goes back to the present, 80 years later where Mrs. Helen Grace (Mary-Louise Parker) and her family has arrived to their new house. Mrs. Helen Grace wants a new start for her family, her daughter Mallory (Sarah Bolger) and her twin sons, Simon and Jared (both played by Freddie Highmore). They move into the Spiderwick Estate which is given to them by their elderly great-aunt Lucinda, Arthur Spiderwick’s daughter.

Jared does not like moving to the new house. Since he has often being perceived as the naughty one, every now and then when something unpleasant happens, he tends to be blamed.

Jared finds a monogrammed key behind a wall after Mallory accidentally uncovers a dumbwaiter system. He later discovers Arthur Spiderwick’s studyroom and he finds a chest which he opens with the monogrammed key and finds Spiderwick’s Field Guide written by Arthur Spiderwick. Despite the attached note which warns him not to read, he does it anyway. The moment he opens the book, a strong signal is somewhat felt by the entire estate, which sends a signal to Mulgarath, a shape-shifting ogre who wants the book so he can kill all the faeries and mankind to take over the world.

Later, Jared meets a brownie named Thimbletack, who explains that magical creatures are normally invisible but can reveal themselves at will. He tells Jared about a protective circle that Arthur Spiderwick placed around the house and gives him a stone with a hole which allows him to see faeries. Simon, mistaken for Jared, is kidnapped by Mulgarath’s goblins, while Jared meets Hogsqueal, a hobgoblin who gives Jared the ability to see all faeries without the aid of the stone. Simon is released by the goblins with the condition that he must steal the book from Jared. Upon his return, Jared and Simon fight over whether they should give the book to Mulgarath without realizing that the goblins are running towards them. Although they manage to fend off the goblins, Simon’s leg is badly injured by the goblins. Mallory, meanwhile is wandering outside the circle and does not heed the warning of his brothers until the goblins attack her. Jared throws the stone with a hole so she can see the goblins and when does, she finally believes what Jared has said earlier.

Thinking their great-aunt Lucinda (Joan Plowright) can be their only hope, Jared and Mallory escapes to an underground tunnel while Simon distracts the monsters. Lucinda is in the nuthouse for telling Arthur Spiderwick is kidnapped by faeries, which is somewhat the truth. In fact, Arthur Spiderwick was “rescued” by Sylphs, a type of faerie when the goblins attacked. Lucinda tells them they must find her father to have him destroy the book. Suddenly, Mulgarath’s goblins attack them from the windows and manage to steal several pages from the book before they are driven off.

The siblings use the book to summon Arthur Spiderwick’s pet, a griffin, which takes them to the realms of the Sylphs. There, Arthur Spiderwick is still alive and has not aged since the day he was “rescued”. Spiderwick tells Jared that the only person who can save the world is Jared himself since he has the knowledge of the book. Spiderwick distracts the faeries to enable Jared and Mallory to escape from the land of the Sylphs.

On their return, Hogsqueal warns them that one of the stolen pages will allow Mulgurath to destroy the protective circle when the moon is full. Mrs. Grace, initially does not want to believe what their children tell her since she knows the children is probably under some kind of pressure after they move. Somehow, when Thimbletack appears and when Jared gives the stone of hole to see enable her to see the attacking goblins, she believes her children without doubt. The family arms themselves with steel knives and tomato sauce. When they are forced into the kitchen, they place all of their tomato sauce and salt into the oven and hide before detonating it, killing all of the goblins.

Then Mr. Grace enters the house and tells Jared that he came to apologize; however, Jared discovers that he is an imposter and stabs him in the stomach. He turns out to be Mulgarath in disguise. Jared escapes with the book through the dumbwaiter while Mulgarath transforms into a python and gives pursuit. On the roof, Mulgarath turns back into his ogre form and almost captures Jared when Jared throws the book onto the lawn; as Mulgarath transforms into a raven to catch it, he is snatched and eaten by Hogsqueal.

The Graces family bring Lucinda back to the house; and the Sylphs appear, bringing Arthur. However, since he cannot remain, because his age would return to him all at once and kill him, Lucinda asks to be taken with him, and so the Sylphs transform her back into her six-year-old self and spirit the two away.

Overall, the movie is somewhat short of expectation. But, it’s a good movie for the whole family.
