Michelle Williams and Ewan McGregor in "Deception"
Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor), a pathetic accountant who leads a lonely life until he meets Wyatt Bose (Hugh Jackman), a charismatic and successful lawyer who introduces him to an anonymous sex club only known as The List, where strangers meet each other with the aim of having sex.
He meets a stranger only known as "S" and falls in love with her. When "S" is kidnapped, Jonathan finds out that Wyatt is not the good friend he thought he was and his real name is actually Jamie Getz. He also learns that Wyatt has kidnapped "S" and demands him to transfer money of his clients account to his if he still want to see "S" alive.
Jonathan transfers the money as instructed. Wyatt goes to Spain by imposing as Jonathan and attempts to withdraw the money from the bank but he is told he needs a co-signer called Wyatt Bose. Jonathan shows up and demands half of the USD $20 million dollar. Wyatt agrees and the duo each gets a briefcase of USD$ 10 million dollar.
Jonathan promises to give Wyatt half of his money if Wyatt would tell him how to find "S". Wyatt leads Jonathan to a park and then pulls a gun with an attached silencer on him when he’s shot from behind. "S" appears behind him with gun in her hand. Jonathan leaves Wyatt in the park bleeding to death together with both the briefcase as he chases "S".
Overall, the movie is quite predictable and has very few scenes that can actually make this film qualifies as a thriller. Superb performance from great actors like Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman somehow could not really change the tone of the film. “Are you free, tonight?” “Absolutely not for this kind of crappy movie.”
