A Christmas Carol (2009) – Movie Review

A Christmas Carol is a 3-D animated film adaption of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella of the same name. The film is written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, who produced the film using the same technique used in his films The Polar Express and Beowulf. The movie stars Jim Carrey in multitude of roles.

SPOILER WARNING: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Jim Carrey in "A Christmas Carol"

Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) is a miserly old moneylender. His business partner, Jacob Marley dies on Christmas Eve. Scrooge is stingy even on spending the money for the funeral arrangement.

Seven years later, as usual, Scrooge refuses to celebrate Christmas and rejects his nephew Fred’s invitation to a Christmas dinner. He also forces his underpaid employee Bob Cratchit to work late on Christmas Eve.

That very night, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley appears to wear heavy chains forged from his greedy ways. He warns Scrooge that he will suffer an even worse fate if he doesn’t feel remorse and forewarn that he will be visited by three spirits as his only last chance to repent.

The first spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Past, shows Scrooge visions of his own past, reminding him how he turned into the man he is now. He ignored his family during his childhood and was released by his fiancée when he grew older.

The second spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Present, shows Scrooge the present, where his family and employee celebrate the joy of Christmas no matter rich or poor.

The third and final spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, shows Scrooge the future, where due to the final consequences of his greed, Scrooge has died. Tiny Tim, Cratchit’s ailing young son also died. Scrooge begs the spirit for forgiveness and is willing to change to become a better man for a second chance.

When Scrooge awakens, he finds himself still alive on Christmas morning. He is immediately a changed man, donating to the poor, purchasing a Turkey for Cratchit’s family and attending Fred’s Christmas dinner party. On Boxing day, he gives Cratchit a raise, allowing him to care for Tiny Tim and spends the remainder of his life cheerfully.

Like Beowulf, A Christmas Carol is beautifully made and looks as good as it can get. Jim Carrey’s portray of multiple roles, showing many different facial expressions is impressive. The movie, like Charles Dickens’ story, tells us a moral — Ignorance and Want will lead us to hell. Kudos to Zemeckis for making such a wonderful film.

My ratings: 8 out of 10.
