Nim Rusoe (Abigail Breslin) is an 11-year-old girl who loves to imagine based on her favorite fictional character, Alex Rover (Gerard Butler). Her father, Jack Rusoe (also played by Butler) is a popular scientist and writer live together with her daughter (and her daughter’s animal friends) in an isolated island. The secret location of the island is revealed to nobody except their provisions suppliers.

When Nim’s father goes missing on the island on his trip to find "Nim’s Protozoa", Nim becomes desperate and email Alex Rover to come save her father, didn’t realize that Alex Rover on the book, who is a brave, daring male adventurer is different from the real Alex Rover a.k.a. Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster) — a conservative woman who has never been out of apartment for months.

Guided by an imaginative character, Alex Rover, Alexandra brave herself by flying to Borneo, taking helicopter and stealing boat to reach the remote island based on the email communication they had just to save the little girl, Nim.

Meanwhile, Jack is stranded in the middle of an ocean with a sinking boat, thanks to Galileo (Nim’s friend), Jack manages to salvage his tools and fix his boat in order to return to the island. When he finally manages to return home, so happen, Alexandra is right there as though as she’s waiting for Jack Rusoe. The movie ends with the three of them together live happily ever after and U2’s Beautiful Day is played over the credits.

Overall, it is quite a decent movie with exaggeration which sometimes is too good to be true. After all, Nim’s Island is a fantasy film, so it is alright.

My ratings: 6 out of 10.

Jumper (2008) - Movie Review

Jumper is a film based on the 1992 science fiction novel Jumper by Steven Gould. Directed by Doug Liman, Jumper stars Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson and Anna Sophia Robb and is released on February 14, 2008.

SPOILER WARNING: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The film starts with David Rice (Hayden Christensen) narrating the story of his life and his ability to “jump” or teleport to anywhere in the world. Then it shows young David Rice (Max Thieriot) is outside his high school and gives young Millie Harris (AnnaSophia Robb) a snowman globe as a present. Then young Mark Kobold interrupts and throws the snowman globe far into the frozen lake. When David tries to retrive it, he ends up falling into the water as the ice breaks. All of a sudden, he is teleported to a public library all wet. From then on, he discovers the ability to “jump”, or teleport. David Rice leaves his druken, abusive dad and has a place of his own decorated with tonnes of photographs of the places he has been to.

From then on, David keeps “jumping” without knowing the danger that comes with it. Griffin (Jamie Bell) is another jumper who has been observing David all along — a pub in London, back in Michigan, and in Rome. Griffin, unlike David, lives in a secret location in a desert knowing that there are “Paladins” who catch and kill “Jumpers”. Roland Cox (Samuel L. Jackson) is the leader of the Paladin organization has been pursuing David since he robbed the bank eight years ago. When David finally reveals his power to Millie Harris (Rachel Bilson), he doesn’t realize the consequences it brings. When his ability has finally prospered to a height where he’s even able to overcome Paladin’s capture and save Millie, the movie leaves us with a clueless ending - is Griffin still alive? Roland may be jumped into a desert, but did he find his way out or did he die from famine?

While the movie is incredibly well-scripted, Hayden Christensen is required to perform his own stunts and he injured his hand, split open his ear, and developed a hyperdilated pupil that required hospital care.

My ratings: 7 out of 10. Overall, the movie is well-played, has some really cool action scenes and has some very interesting concepts related to the ability to “jump”.
