10,000 B.C. (2008) – Movie Review

10,000 B.C. is a movie about a mammoth hunter D’Leh (Steven Strait) and his quest to save his tribe from the “four-legged demons”. Though the movie was slated for July 27, 2007, the release date for 10,000 B.C. was pushed back to December 14, 2007. Eventually, the film’s release was postponed a second time to March 7, 2008.

SPOILER WARNING: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The movie focuses on a hunter-gatherer tribe. The prophecy has it that a blue eyed girl, named Evolet (Camilla Belle) has come to the village to tell them that one day, “four-legged demons” will come and destroy the village and its people. But a man will stand up for them and will marry the blue eyed girl. And the man is D’Leh (Steven Strait).

D’Leh is in a tribe where the hunters hunt mammoths. When a band of mysterious warlords raid his village and kidnap Evolet, D’Leh is forced to hunt down these “four-legged demons” and save his love and his people. His journey with Tic’Tic (Cliff Curtis) along the way manages to gather members of other tribes who were also attacked and has their family members “stolen” by the “four-legged demons”.

Encounters with prehistoric animals like saber-toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, Phorusrhacids and ground sloths are extremely brief. Instead, the movie focuses on the journey of D’Leh saving his people.

10,000 BC is a film set seemingly in prehistoric era, i.e. 10,000 B.C. but don’t be fooled — it does not really look like it. If you have watched Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, the storyline of 10,000 BC is unbelievably similar. In fact, Apocalypto is the better movie of the two with the only exception of the prehistoric animals.

Overall, I am disappointed at the film. The main tribe speaks English is fine. But, when D’Leh questions a member of Naku tribe who also speaks English, “How do you know how to speak our language?” — that tickles me. I expect more prehistoric animals and their ways of lives.

My ratings: 6 out of 10. Would have been 6.5 but the movie review rating system plugin does not have a 0.5.
