Captain America: The First Avenger is a superhero film and the fifth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in 2008, Iron Man 2 in 2010 and Thor in 2011.
SPOILER WARNING: Plot and/or ending details follow.
Chris Evans in "Captain America: The First Avenger"
In present day, scientists in the Arctic uncover a mysterious object with a red, white and blue motif — with knowingly, it is a shield belonging to Captain America.
Back in 1942, World War 2 days, Nazi officer Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) and his men pillage a castle in Tønsberg, Norway to steal a mysterious tesseract which Schmidt calls “the jewel of Odin’s treasure room”. Yet again, this shows the connection with the characters in Thor.
In New York City, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is rejected for World War II military duty for the fifth time. His friend Sgt. James “Bucky” Barnes (Sebastian Stan), takes him to the Modern Marvels of Tomorrow exhibition, where famous inventor Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) demonstrates an experimental flying car. Rogers’ determination to serve for his country catches the ear of Bavarian scientist Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), who works with the U.S. government’s Strategic Scientific Reserve. Erskine recruits Rogers to the camp under under Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) and SSR officer Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in hoping he will be chosen as the first “super-soldier” experiment.
Meanwhile, Schmidt a.k.a. The Skull and scientist Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) has successfully harness the power of the cube-like tesseract.
In a secret lab in Brooklyn, Erskine and others convene with Senator Brandt (Michael Brandon) as Rogers is transformed into a tall and muscular man but Erskine is assassinated by Heinz Kruger. Rogers gives chase as Kruger flees with a car, and eventually pulls Kruger out from a submarine, but Kruger commits suicide.
Brandt happily deploys Rogers as Captain America mascot together with colorful costume to tour and promote the war bonds. During a show in Italy, Rogers learns Barnes is one of the soldiers captured by the Red Skull, hence, he convinces Carter and Stark to fly him behind enemy lines in a solo rescue mission. Rogers manages to free Barnes and others and returns to the base.
Rogers then recruits his own team and with a new circular shield from Stark, Captain America and his team go on to destroy HYDRA’s bases one by one. At the same time, Rogers’ romance with Carter blossom as she asks him for a dance.
During a battle on a train which transport Zola, Barnes falls to death into a deep gorge. But the capture of Zola leads the commandos to the Red Skull. In the final battle, the Red Skull disintegrates himself when he attempts to use the tesseract, but Rogers is unable to control the plane as it crashes into the Arctic. Stark manages to recover the tesseract but not the aircraft.
Back to the present, Rogers awakens and realizes he is not in the 40s when S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) informs him that he has been asleep for almost 70 years. Stay back for post-credits scene!
- 8 out of 10
- Captain America: The First Avenger is exciting and nostalgic at the same time. The film beautifully depicts the 40′s war era together with the memorable soundtrack which still keeps repeating in my head right now. Most importantly, it brings us a step closer to most-anticipated film, The Avengers.
- In the post-credits scene, which is actually a teaser trailer of The Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) approaches Steve Rogers in a gym, and tells him that he needs him to save the world. There, Tony Starks (Robert Downey Jr.) a.k.a. Iron Man 2, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, Bruce Banter are seen as part of The Avengers, while Loki, the villain in Thor is seen being escorted in handcuffs by S.H.I.E.L.D.
