Odin (Anthony Hopkins), king of Asgard, defeats the Frost Giants of Jotunheim and their leader Laufey (Colm Feore) in a bid to prevent them to conquer the Nine Realms and in the process capture the Casket of Ancient Winters, the source of their power.
Unlike his father, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is arrogant, ruthless and ignorant. After failing to ascend the throne of Asgard as King when interrupted by the invasion of the Frost Giants, Thor invades Jotunheim against his father’s order, accompanied by his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), childhood friend Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and the Warriors Three which consequently forces Odin to save their lives. In an effort to teach Thor a lesson in humility, Odin banishes Thor to Earth and strips all his power. He’s accompanied by his hammer, Mjolnir but he can only wield it if he’s worthy.
Thor lands on New Mexico fashionably in a tornado and is discovered by scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), her bubbly assistant Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) and mentor Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) whilst Thor’s hammer is found and confisticated by S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) who also confisticates Jane’s data, her computers and equipments. When Thor learns about Mjolnir, he invades S.H.I.E.L.D. facility to retrieve it only to find himself unable to lift it. He is captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. but is later rescued by Dr. Selvig and falls in love with Jane.
When Loki discovers he is Laurey’s son and was adopted by Odin, Odin falls into Odinsleep (coma) due to stress and Loki takes over the throne. As the God of Mischief, Loki offers Laurey the chance to kill Odin as well as retrieve the Casket.
Unhappy with Loki’s ruling, Sif and the Warriors Three convince Heimdell (Idris Elba), gatekeeper of Bifrost Bridge, to allow them to enter Earth and rescue Thor. Knowing that, Loki sends the Destroyer, a metallic Golem, to pursue them and kill Thor. Funnily, S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson mistakes the Destroyer as another Stark’s invention.
Sif and the Warriors Three find Thor but are not able to overcome the Destroyer, forcing Thor to sacrifice himself to save Jane and others. As Thor dies, he proves worthy to wiled Mjolnir and the hammer returns to him restoring his powers to allow him to defeat the Destroyer.
In Asgard, Loki betrays and kills Laufey, revealing his true plan to use their attempt on Odin’s life as an excuse to destroy Jotunheim with the Bifrost Bridge and prove himself worthy to Odin. Thor arrives and fights his brother before destroying the Bifrost Bridge to stop his plan, stranding himself in Asgard. Odin awakens and saves the brothers from falling, but Loki allows himself to fall, believing he has failed Odin.
Don’t forget to stay on for the post-credit scene where further connection to the Avengers is revealed.
Overall, Thor is not your regular god of Thunder from Nordic mythology but he is a superhero character from Marvel that is associated with the god of Thunder. Later on, he will join forces with Iron Man and others in the much anticipated Avengers. Thor is light-hearted, be it humor or action while remains entertaining.
