Yowazzup’s Top 10 Movies of 2008

The year is coming to an end and 2008 has been a wonderful year for the movie industry with many adaptions coming to the big screen. Sadly, not all movies made it to the big screen in Asia. Some good movies were only shown in limited releases while others were not given a chance at all. Therefore, most of the movies listed here are mainstream blockbusters. Below are Yowazzup’s Top 10 movies of 2008: -

Number 10: Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Hellboy II: The Golden ArmyHellboy II: The Golden Army is one of the best-adapted films from a comic book aside from The Dark Knight. Hellboy II captures the imagination of the audience with its impressive visual effect. Director Guillermo del Toro introduces the audience to tree elemental, elves and even goblins. Don’t forget that Guillermo del Toro will be directing "The Hobbits" and we’ll get to see more goblins and trolls.

Number 9: Vantage Point

Vantage PointVantage Point brings filming to a new level. In revealing the mastermind behind the attempted assassination of US President, the director takes the audience through eight different vantage points in order to understand the truth. Brilliant use of camera angles and superb cinematography made this an outstanding movie.

Number 8: Death Race

Death RaceDeath Race is an action-packed thriller that makes you glue to your seat. A remake of 1975’s Death Race 2000, Death Race has plenty of actions in store. Even though it lacks a good storyline, the action, violence and the hot Natalie Martinez make up for it. Brutal, but it’s surely fun to watch.

Number 7: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

Madagascar: Escape 2 AfricaMadagascar: Escape 2 Africa is an enjoyable movie that’s fun to watch from the start till the end. The characters in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa have greater depths than it’s predecessor. Not only that, the actors such as Ben Stiller and Chris Rock play their character so well, you may even think they’re wearing the animal suits when they were recording the voice. The jokes are hilarious and original, it’s a feel good movie.

Number 6: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkullIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a long anticipated film and it takes a lot of guts for Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford to put the movie altogether. Critics may not like it, but think of it, everything’s perfect except having aliens in Indiana Jones may be a little too far-fetched. Still, Harrison Ford, Karen Allen and Cate Blanchett gave a very good performance, indeed.

Number 5: Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu PandaKung Fu Panda is more than an animated movie, it combines well choreographed martial arts, great humor and superb visual effects and graphics. Jack Black played Po the Panda exceptionally well. Even though some critics claimed the movie imitates Star Wars, I believe Kung Fu Panda is original and brilliantly written. A great flick which is full of awesomeness.

Number 4: Definitely Maybe

Definitely MaybeDefinitely Maybe is a sweet romantic comedy that takes you through reality of what love is today. Ryan Reynolds showed us why he deserves Scarlett Johansson. That aside, the movie is romantic but surreal. The movie also brings the best out of Abigail Breslin, the 12-year-old actress. Definitely worth watching.

Number 3: Iron Man

Iron ManIron Man is a brilliantly adapted superhero movie that has surpassed many viewers’ expectation. The script is well-written, the visual effect is the best it could get and Robert Downey Jr. played Iron Man and Mr. Tony Stark splendidly he even earned the top spot in EW’s Top Entertainers of the Year. Can’t wait for the sequel and The Avengers.

Number 2: WALL-E

The Dark KnightWALL-E is an animated movie that touches everyone’s heart. WALL-E may be an animated film but it’s wholesome, funny, touching, romantic, heart-warming and yet, meaningful. WALL-E is a movie that has almost no conversation, since WALL-E can’t really talk. Somehow, it manages to deliver its message to the audience, it manages to portray the meaning of true love, it manages to tell the world that we must change our lifestyle before it’s too late. It is the perfect movie for everyone.

Number 1: The Dark Knight

The Dark KnightThe Dark Knight, as the most anticipated movie of 2008 did amazingly well surpassing its target. The Dark Knight ticket sales reached $155.3 million in just three days. The late actor Heath Ledger gave an outstanding performance as "The Joker" while Christian Bale did exceptionally well too as "Batman". The plots are superb and cleverly played. The movie is never short of actions. The only shortcoming would be how can other superhero movies emulate the great success of The Dark Knight? I don’t really know. All I know is The Dark Knight has simply put a smile on my face.
