Vatican City - Pope Benedict XVI “sincerely regrets” that Muslims have been offended by some of his words in a recent speech in Germany, the Vatican said Saturday — stopping short of issuing an apology the Islamic world has demanded. The new Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said the pope’s position on Islam is unmistakably in line with Vatican teaching that the church regards Muslims with “esteem.”

What is most ironic about this entire situation is that after the Pope made his speech quoting the words of a 14th century Byzantine Emperor — “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached” - some Islam followers felt it appropriate to burn several catholic churches and kill a nun in retaliation. Further, it seems some iraqi Islams have now threatened the Vatican.
It would seem a more appropriate and reasonable response would have been a verbal response challenging the Pope’s comments rather than destruction, threats and death.
